Passing a PRINCE2 exam feels like crossing a finish line, so it can come as a surprise to learn that the certificate has a shelf life. At Elite Training NI, we regularly hear from people who have dug out their certificate, spotted a date three years on and wondered what happens next.
Both Foundation and Practitioner certificates stay valid for three years. After that, PeopleCert (the examination institute behind PRINCE2) asks you to choose a route if you want to remain registered. Broadly, you can either re-sit after three years or keep things topped up annually.
If you hold the Foundation certificate
The three-year route means going back to the classroom. You can attend a Foundation course and retake the exam, or you can progress to a PRINCE2 Practitioner course and sit that exam instead. Practitioner automatically includes Foundation accreditation, so stepping up renews what you have and adds a higher qualification in one go. For plenty of people, that is the better deal.
The annual route skips the exam altogether. You pay a yearly subscription to PeopleCert and log CPD through their programme, which keeps your certification current as you go.
If you hold the Practitioner certificate
Your choices look similar. After three years, you can retake the Practitioner exam following a refresher course, or take a different PeopleCert accreditation, which also renews your PRINCE2 Practitioner status. The annual subscription and CPD route are open to you too.
Which route makes sense?
There is no single answer. The CPD route suits people who work on projects daily and will genuinely log their learning, because it needs steady record keeping rather than a one-off effort. Re-sitting suits those who prefer a structured refresher and a clear end point, especially if the original qualification came before PRINCE2 7.
