Anyone researching PRINCE2 training tends to hit the same wall fairly quickly. The course pages talk about Foundation and Practitioner as if everyone already knows which one applies to them. At Elite Training NI, we get asked this question most weeks, usually from someone who has been told to get PRINCE2, without much more context than that.

Foundation is the starting point. It covers PRINCE2 terminology, along with the principles and processes that shape the method, and it’s built for anyone who needs to work within a PRINCE2 environment rather than run one. If your role means sitting on a project board or supporting a project manager, rather than running the project yourself, Foundation on its own is usually enough.

Practitioner goes further. It tests whether you can apply the methodology to a live scenario rather than just recognise it, and it’s the level employers usually mean when a job advert asks for PRINCE2 qualified. You can only sit the Practitioner exam once you hold a valid Foundation pass, so the two levels are sequential rather than a choice between equals.

That’s where the confusion usually comes from. People assume they’re picking one over the other, when in reality the question is whether they need to stop after Foundation or carry on to Practitioner. Someone stepping into project management for the first time, or leading projects day to day, will get far more long-term value from completing both. Those whose role only touches projects occasionally may only need the grounding that Foundation provides.

Our PRINCE2 training in Belfast runs both levels separately, or as one five-day course, with the exams included in the fee either way. Booking the five-day route tends to work out better value if you already know Practitioner is the end goal, since it removes the gap between courses and keeps the material fresh for the second exam.

If you’re still weighing up prince 2 in Belfast against other options, or want a straight answer on which level fits your role, get in touch with the team at Elite Training NI, or contact us directly. Call us on +44 28 9024 2622 or email enquiries@elitetraining.com, and we’ll talk you through it.
